Types of Caitya

Saririka Dhatu Caitya:

Enshrines the physical relics of the Buddha or other revered figures.

 

Paribhoga Caitya:

Contains objects used by the Buddha or other holy persons.

 

Uddhesika Caitya:

Represents the Buddha or significant Buddhist events symbolically.

 

Dharmadhātu Caitya:

Symbolizes the Buddhist teachings and the ultimate truth.

 

Vajradhātu Caitya:

Represents the indestructible nature of the Buddha’s teachings and enlightenment.

Caitya in Nepal:

A Historical Perspective

The oldest Caitya in Nepal is the Dharmadeva (Dhando) Caitya in Chabahil, Kathmandu. Other significant Caityas include Svayambhu Caitya, Boudha Caitya, and several Ashokan Caityas of Patan, among others.

Challenges in Understanding Caityas

Determining the origins of Caityas is challenging due to damaged historical records and limited local awareness about their importance.

Cultural and Religious Significance of Caitya

Caityas represent the Triratna (Triple Gems): Buddha, Dharma, and Saṃgha, and also symbolize Adi Buddha, Dharmadhātu, Vajradhātu, and the Pancha Buddha.

  • Harmika: A square railing atop the dome symbolizing the world of the gods
