Swayambhū-Purāvṛtta (The Chronicles of Swayambhu)
Woven on a traditional handloom, this textile work reinterprets the legendary emergence of Svayambhū through Nepal’s heritage fabric, Dhākā. Framed by intricate woven patterns and prayer wheel motifs, the first composition depicts the radiant thousand-petaled lotus arising from the primordial waters of Nāgadaha.
The second panel illustrates Bodhisattva Mañjuśrī carving the Chobhar Gorge to drain the primordial lake, guided by the divine bhāvanā to reveal the sacred manifestation of Svayambhū to the world. The third composition portrays Bodhisattva Mañjuśrī alongside King Dharmakara in the legendary city of Mañjupāṭan, together with the construction of the Svayambhū Caitya by King Prachandadeva, as described in traditional narratives.
An acclaimed Dhaka weaver and CTEVT-certified trainer, Chunu Bastola has over two decades of experience in the handicraft sector. Recognized as the Best Dhaka Weaver by the Federation of Handicraft Associations of Nepal, she has trained more than 3,000 women through her dedicated practice. Her work reflects a deep commitment to preserving and innovating Nepal’s iconic Dhaka textile tradition, carrying it forward as both craft and art.
