About the Art

The face of Bhairava with the standing figure of Karunamaya narrates the legend of how Karunamaya was brought from a distant land, Kamarupa, to relieve the Kathmandu Valley from a long drought. During the journey, four Bhairavas assisted carrying the Purna Kalasa in which the deity was enclosed. Even today, the four Bhairavas dwell on four giant wooden wheels and at the front of the shaft of Karunamaya’s chariot.
